Review Summary

The Merrell Bare Access XTR trail running shoes are a fine choice for those on a budget. These trail shoes don’t only come at an economical price, but they are sensitive and offer a snug ride with a nice ground connection as you head off-road. While they are not the most durable shoes for extra long distances or the toughest mountain terrains, they feel and perform well in areas that don’t need much foot protection.

  • PROS
  • The shoes are breathable with a thin mesh upper.
  • You get a more connected ground feel with the low stack height
  • It has a zero-drop platform for better stability and proprioception
  • It comes at an affordable price and great value
  • The shoes are very lightweight with firm padding
  • CONS
  • Not the best traction for slippery surfaces
  • The shoes aren’t as water repellent as other trail runners
  • Some complaints that the mesh absorbs water and doesn’t dry quickly

Detailed Review

The Merrell Bare Access XTR is a barefoot trail shoe that functions competently for walks and runs beyond the running tracks or pavement. It takes on a similar design and function as the Merrell Trail Globe 5 but is designed as a trail runner and a very lightweight one at that. Because the shoes are very light, they have the least underfoot protection, making them better for short distances and areas with fewer sharp objects or jagged rocks.

Materials

Most of the shoes are made with lightweight mesh and thin TPU overlays for more of a structure. However, it won’t cover high wear areas adequately, particularly on the forefoot, which is more prone to creases and tears.

It also has a toe bumper made with thin TPU overlays, and while it did its job, it won’t be enough on rough terrains where you can expect a lot of sharp obstructions around.

The shoe weighs 516g for a men’s size 45, which is lightweight for trail runners. This adds to its comfort and increases the natural movement of your feet, as you won’t have excess weight lugging you down.

The Vibram rubber outsole is designed with a 3mm deep lug pattern better off on less intense trails. The shoes’ outsoles offer a sticky tread, which runners found to grip objects with smooth surfaces, like flat rocks, efficiently.

However, reviewers mention that the shoes won’t have enough traction on slippery surfaces or when using them on snow, mud, loose dirt, or wet grass. The non-aggressive and short lug pattern design makes it unsuitable for overly wet areas but is adequate for relatively dry pavement, dirt roads, and trails.

When talking about durability, the shoe does not look or feel as flimsy or soft as other lightweight barefoot trail runners. The materials appear durable and can last with proper care. Take note that the shoes are thin and light, so reviewers recommend running on less intense roads and trails to extend the lifespan.

Performance

One of the main features the Merrell Bare Access XTR trail running shoes offer is the barefoot feel. The shoes are low to the ground with only a very thin layer of cushioning, which gives you an excellent connection with the ground. This also means your feet will be more sensitive to sharp rocks and other objects, so you’ll need to be careful with where you step.

In terms of underfoot protection, the shoes are on the more sensitive side. If you prefer more sensitivity in your shoes (like many barefoot and minimalist runners do), then you’ll like these shoes. Numerous Merrell Bare Access XTR reviews share how you get a lot of feedback from the shoes and that the padding feels firmer over bouncy and squishy, which they like.

Reviewers are also impressed with the stability of the Merrell Bare Access XTRs, thanks to the fact that it has a zero-drop platform. The 17mm stack height is one of the lowest people can find from trail running shoes. The shoes also have a supportive arch with a slightly snugger fit.

Comfort Level

There are mixed Merrell Bare Access XTR reviews on the comfort level. It’s a bit different compared to other trail running shoes, making the overall feel subjective.

Some reviewers shared how the shoes don’t necessarily feel uncomfortable, but they feel something as they run. This may be due to how the shoes have a high arch and a narrower fit in the midfoot area, along with the wide toe box and heel area. While the design can suit those with wide feet, it might not fit particular foot shapes.

In terms of the water-resistance, reviewers noted that it absorbs and retains water when it gets wet. While the shoes dry up in time, it isn’t as water-repellent as other trail running shoes. This makes the Merrell Bare Access XTR less ideal for wearing during rainy days or trails where you expect puddles and mud.

As for the fit and sizing, many reviewers have commented positively. Most have mentioned that it fits true to size. The wide heel and toe box makes it suitable for those with wide feet, so those with narrower feet may need to order half a size down.

Style and Design

Many reviewers like the overall style of the shoes, looking more like a traditional sneaker than the typical barefoot shoe. They are recommended to use for trail and road runs or even for casual days out.

Final Call

All in all, the Merrell Bare Access XTR gives trail runners value for their money with an affordable price tag and zero-drop platform to encourage natural movement. These shoes offer good support and stability, along with an intimate connection to the surface as you run.

Granted, the traction isn’t the best, and it takes time to get used to the shoes’ unique feel as you wear them. However, many reviewers continue finding the Merrell Bare Access XTR comfortable and enjoyable to use whether they’re running or on a casual day out.

These shoes are best suited for trail runners who plan on heading to lighter trails with fewer sharp objects and obstructions. Furthermore, these shoes can’t handle too much water exposure, making them better for sunny days with fewer chances of coming across puddles and muddy areas. Not only does this help with the shoes’ durability, but it keeps users safe, too.
