The Z-Trail EV is a lightweight, versatile, and durable sports sandal perfect for almost all types of activities. With a size 9 pair weighing under 11oz, trail runners and ultralight backpackers alike will find a friend in this sandal. This new version of Z-Trail by Xero features most of the characteristics a user would want from zero-drop, minimalist sandals designed for warm days.

Made from Earth and Vegan-Friendly Materials

The Xero Z Trail is made from earth and vegan-friendly materials, and it eliminates more than 70% of all unnecessary elements found in modern sports shoes. The soft, tubular webbing straps are made of nylon obtained from recycled water bottles, which is even better for the environment.

The comfortable tubular webbing system holds the sandal securely in place, and the adjustable Z-pattern allows you to get the perfect tension across your foot, over your foot, and behind your heel. Several users, however, complained that the buckle system connecting the straps and sole broke up easily after using it a few times.

Weight-wise, this new Z-Trail weighs only 5.4oz each piece for size 9 men. This redesigned Z-Trail is just as light and flexible as the original. When compared to the Z-Trek sandals, this sandal is 20% lighter.

Durability & Protection

The Z-Trail sandals feature an updated 10mm FeelLite™ sole with a middle layer of TrailFoam™ and an updated dual chevron lug pattern. 

The updated dual chevron lug pattern, which is deeper, sets it apart from the previous Z Trail model. Some reviews mentioned how the lugs improved the traction and added protection from sharp objects under their feet. It is also equipped with a built-in heel cup, which provides a secure fit and helps prevent debris from entering.

Some users, however, complained about how these Xero Z Trail sandals are not durable. Signs of wear show after a short mile of use which is contrary to Xero’s 5000-mile warranty. 

Due to wear and tear along the tread, there is a noticeable lack of traction. Additionally, there is visible wear along the top edge of the footbed, where small black pieces fall off. Instances where the soles split in multiple places after washing with water and drying it out were also mentioned in some reviews.

Design & Usage

The new Z Trail sandals boast superior performance yet are stylish enough to match just about any look. Take it on trails, boardwalks, and everywhere in between. They have great flotation characteristics and can resist water, making them excellent for rafting, canoeing, and paddleboarding.

Fit is personalized, comfortable, and secure, thanks to multi-point adjustment. A pull on the Z-pattern webbing will secure the strap tight. 

The versatility of this shoe makes it a favorite for many users, according to a good number of Xero Z Trail reviews. Besides meeting basic needs in the backcountry, it’s comfy to use at camp with a pair of socks after a long day in boots, and it looks good enough to wear in town to run errands.

However, some reviews claimed these Xero Z Trail Sandals were only good for light hikes. This was mainly due to the slippery footbed, tendency of the foot to slide forward in the straps, and thin sole that is not intended to last for very long.

Comfort & Grip

Simple and light, these foam-filled sandals have just a few thin layers and straps, but they are surprisingly comfortable and soft. They have a smooth and supple upper layer, and it features a slight heel cup and soft padded Z-pattern webbing straps that don’t cut into the toes. 

The barefoot design lets users feel the ground beneath their feet, which may or may not appeal to everyone. There were some complaints that these sandals are only 10 millimeters thick and that sharp stones or sticks might feel uncomfortable under the feet, especially for those who aren’t used to them. 

According to some reviews, this Xero sandals mens is not that grippy, especially on wet surfaces. Several users mentioned how the foot slips forward when the midsole is wet. Despite the upgraded tread and deeper lugs, the outsole does not sufficiently hold to the ground, causing some users to slip.

There may also be an adjustment period with minimalist shoes, especially if the user is used to more supportive footwear. Those who need arch support or prefer more padding during long walks around town might want to look elsewhere.

Fit

True to size, the new Z Trail sandals are comfortable and light as the previous version.

In comparison to ordinary sports sandals, this Xero sandals mens has a wider forefoot. The Xero z trail womens are recommended for men with narrow feet, and Xero suggests going one size up. Men’s 8’s are the same length as women’s 9’s.

Besides having a quick-drying webbing upper, this pair of barefoot shoes have adjustable lacing for a custom fit.

However, several reviews pointed out that the lacing system must be continually readjusted to prevent the foot from slipping forward.

Performance

Featuring an updated FeelLite sole with a middle layer of TrailFoam and a dual chevron lug pattern, the Z-Trail EV is built for performance and comfort. 

Comfort, protection, and trail-ready traction combine in these shoes that allow the wearer to bend, move, flex, and feel the terrain beneath the feet. 

However, several Xero shoes Z Trail reviews complained of a slippery footbed. The feet tend to slide forward when walking downhill regardless of how much the straps are tightened. According to the review, this sandal is not the most durable in the long run, and it’s not the perfect sandal for hiking or spending a lot of time in a river.

Still, this is a minimalist, barefoot-style that does have its benefits. Users can feel the changing terrain underfoot since the shoe is so thin and flexible. This allows better balance on rocks, slopes, and trails.
